I just got a new 4G ipod touch. The one with the camera etc. It came with ios 4.1 which apparently doesn't work with Ubuntu yet. Any ideas when this might be fixed.

check out the new libimobiledevice! PPA from Paul McEnery.
I just got my iPhone 3GS (iOS 4.1) syncing again today. I have to manually mount though (ifuse), and sync with gtkpod. Nothing a quick script can't take care of.
has anyone figured this out yet? i still cannot connect my ipod touch 4g to ubuntu and sync like i could with my older i devices.
thank you in advance!

Yep. I got my phone working yesterday.

It is not as polished as iTunes, however it will sync iOS 4.1.
I don't have an iPod touch 4g to try, however I believe they run the same iOS as the iPhone 4 (iOS 4.1 - same as my 3GS). There should be no impediment to syncing your iPod.
Try it out and let me know how you go.
ipod touch 4g shows up in banshee, info like os 4.1 and free space are displayed correctly, but no data on the i pod is visible and nothing can be copied over
