canon bjc-240 print quality - not so good

I have installed 9.10 and while I can successfully print to my old Canon BJC-240, using the out-of-the-box drivers, but the text looks pretty much like dot matrix - readable but not so good.

I installed the foo-matic filters but the print is still the same

I really do not want to install XP just to use the Canon windows drivers; I realize that Canon sucks for linux drivers.
Any help would be most appreciated.

    I have the same issue.
But it was Ok with previous Ubuntu release.

Did someone succeed to have a good print quality in Ubuntu 9.10 and BJC-240 printer?

it seems ubuntu chooses wrong driver by default. install foomatic-db-gutenprint via Ubuntu Software Centre. go to System->Administration->printing. right click the printer, choose properties and then with "Make and model" press change. choose Foomatic/gutenprint-ijs.5.2. overwrite the setup, when asked. done. it also gives more appropriate options. thanx go to SmokeyD at #ubuntu channel.
