backup my home only, how ?

I have a dual boot, winxp, and ubuntu. WindowsXP is just cooked, no safe mode, no Last working config, nothing. So I may need to re-install xp.
when i do this, I know it overwrites grub.

So ubuntu still working fine, but I want a backup of my /home, just in case. I wish i had setup /home with it's own partition.

When I check home size, it shows 1.3 gigs, but when i try to back it up to a usb stick (4gig) formated to ext3, it never finishes. Seems to run out of space. No error, just never completes.

I installed Mint backup, and before that, used Simple Backup Config.

I just want my /home backed up, in case i have to re-install ubuntu as well.

I formatted the usb stick to ext3 in hopes it would keep permissions intact. Maybe i should or shouldn't be doing that ?.
