The card will work with Ubuntu with either the open source or nvidia drivers. Beyond that I can't help you since I know nothing of the cards performance or what you have right now.
From the way you asked, I'd say no, you should not buy it.
Sorry for not providing more info.
I purchased this:
Intel H55TC mATX Socket LGA1156 Motherboard
and this:
Intel Core i5-760 CPU
So I need a new graphics card.
I would then. The intel video should work, but its not that great and there is the possiblity of problems. Using nVidia should give you no hassles.
If you want a card for that kind of computer, buy at least a nvidia 220 or 240.
The 210 has 64-bit memory interface, the 220 and up has 128-bit. There is quite a bit of performance diffrence between the 64-bit ans 128-bit addressing - my old 7600GS with 128 MB RAM (128-bit) runs circles around a 210 with 512 MB RAM (64-bit) i tested once.
Surely its price is very good... People look at the price tags especially if they are small.
I just wanted to make sure he really knows what the 210 is: a card dedicated to htpcs (Home Theatre PC) and such, not for games (and for htpcs you really dont need a coreIwhatever cpu).
He has a powerful rig there and that rig might be bottlenecked in games (or any 3d program) by a 64-bit gpu. The 220/240 has all the vdpau capabilities the 210 has and they are more powerful. I assume if he got the cash for a i5 he would consider going all the way building a rig that has some horsepower...
I can see your point gradinaruvasil, but dont foget-
It will be bottlenecked in games and some 3D programs, but if espmartin isnt playing games or using 3D (not desktop 3D, things like 3D studio max) then the extra 'horsepower' will be totally pointless.
Most of the web designers I've met dont play heavy games, though a few of them dabble in 3D.
So if the GT210 is a good choice or a higher level card would work better depends on the use its being put to.
