Does it make sense to buy Intel I7 CPU?

    Hi,

i read that with the current kernel linux can't really use Intel I7 Super Boost and other new features. Apparently more support will come with Kernel 2.6.33, 10.04 Lucid Lynx will have 2.6.32.

I don't know much about hardware matters, a lot of the articles on the Internet confuse me.
    My question:
Will kernel 2.6.33 and beyond be likely to support the Intel I7 Chips to it's full potential?
There are some nice 1000$ laptops available that have the i7 720QM Chip.
    Thanks for your advice...

    1. The Linux kernel 2.6.33 and beyond will almost certainly support most, if not all, of the Intel Core i7 features. You just have to be patient until it does. In the meantime the i7 (without its turboboost) is still a very powerful CPU for a laptop.

    2. If you need a suggestion for a laptop, I suggest the Sony Vaio F series. Sony makes very good laptops, just look at my signature.

Sounds like I thought, I'm sure the non boosted CPU is fast for the linux things I do, and future improvements sounds good. I'll have a look at the Sony's

    Thanks

I just ordered the Asus laptop below today. It is pretty beast for the price. Total cost with standard shipping and tax for me was $1160.

I wouldnt get an i7 laptop.

Battery times still suck compared to a Core 2 Duo, and because the C2Ds are now being phazed out, there are some really good deals on C2D (and C2Q) laptops. C2D is Very Mature now, and they are great machines (this from a borderline AMD fanboy)

If you really need the power of an i7, get a desktop.

I agree. I think that for me the sweet spot is C2D. I have a TP with SU9400 that runs cool and has plenty of power.
