No Control icon on the top left

Yesterday I had in mind to install a printer on my Ubuntu 11.10. But after some googling I found out that in order to add a printer, and that goes through that icon labeled Control in the top left corner of the screen. But I realized that I have no Control icon there, and don't know where to find it...

What version of Ubuntu did your Google results indicate? If it's not 11.10, those instructions are likely NOT to work.

In 11.10, the icon on the top-left is called the Dash icon.

Sorry, it's top right, from the aspect of user... It is a icon, something like gear wheel. But nevertheless... my point is that I can not add a printer!!!

Go to the "cog" icon > System Settings > Printing > Add.

I think this is what you are after or is the cog icon itself missing ? If it is, you can still access System Settings by searching in Dash for it. See screenshot for the Add printer dialog.

Edit: notice to the OP, I just noticed this question refers to edubuntu, just fyi, I am on 11.10 (Unity) in case of layout differences.

I found it... in the system settings... thanks... but there's another problem... the add printer button is grayed out... I can not click on it...

See if you can find a button that says "Unlock" in the top right corner of that window.
