monstersteve go to System > Administration > Additional drivers.

if it's active then Remove it, restart, and activate it again, then restart again. by restart I mean restart the whole system.

if it's not active just activate it and restart.

if you see no nvidia drivers... well... that's more complicated.

My desktop runs on an Intel Pentium 4. My new 10.10 installation has been running pretty slowly. For example, when I open a new tab in Chrome, the mouse freezes and jerks around, and if I were to be playing music at the same time, it'd stutter as well.

I have same issue; chrome and xorg are top 2 with less than 10% cpu consumed.

wonder if this related to the repeated npviewer.bin crashes from earlier this week. ... I'm going to try removing npviewer.bin ...

Re: 10.10 runs slow and jerky

If you have nvidia check which version drivers you are running. Earlier 10.10 beta used 256.53 which some people with GTS cards had (slow) trouble with. Sometime during RC 260.19.06 became the default. I got those during RC by deactivating nvidia in Hardware Drivers, rebooting, activating, then rebooting. But my GT 220 had no problems with either version. Although, glxgears in latter version was 50% faster.

If you upgraded and had regular repo drivers, you might try the deactivating, activating thing in Hardware Drivers. If you installed video drivers some other way, you are on your own.

I have not downloaded the 10.10 release yet, so not sure which version that uses.

Re: 10.10 runs slow and jerky

    thanks for reply.

removed and reinstalled my nvidia drivers as suggested.

I have upgrade chrome to the 7.0 beta; Chrome still seems a little laggy. but this may be a chrome thing.

my system works well enough for me right now.

    thanks!

Update: Oct 13 2010 -- my system now runs very very nice. No lag noticed at all. Meerkat updates + Chrome 7.x. (I hope this does not rejuvenate this thread; trying to post positive news.)

Re: 10.10 runs slow and jerky

i have the exact same problem with ubuntu 10.10 on a toshiba satellite a55 with an intel G855 graphic card

running $top is revealing 2 instances of programs kslowd000 and kslow001 that are hogging CPU threads.

Does anyone know what are they meant for?

Under 10.10, the 855GM cards work using the worse than useless fbdev drivers. You should have stuck with 10.04.

Suggest try the workaround here described in the description. If it doesnt work, go back to 10.04.

Celeron processor on a laptop and the 10.10 upgrade is working perfectly. Haven't tried upgrading my dual core AMD yet.
