this was fixed by re-installing ubuntu 8.10 only using the kernal, 2.6.27-7-generic.

    Re: what does this mean?

let me re-state the above commit.

    1. i did a re-format using gparted
    2. i re-loaded the os from start. a clean install.
    3. all upgrades took and as usual, ubuntu came through.

alot of mistakes are my fault not the system..
