Cannot load Nvidia driver on Ubuntu 10.04

So, I have converted back to Ubuntu after a short and positive experience with Arch Linux and so far I am impressed with 10.04. However, it appears that I don't know what I am doing in terms of installing my video driver. I have a Nvidia Geforce 6800 and I get this message when trying to install the drivers off the main site:

ERROR: Unable to load the kernel module ‘nvidia.ko’
I found this but it didn't help at all, I've blacklisted everything and still no go.

Thumbs up Re: Cannot load Nvidia driver on Ubuntu 10.04

    Solution:
    sudo apt-get --purge remove xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
    sudo modprobe -r nouveau
    Thanks so much Dark Aspect
I am now able to install the drivers like how I normally do.

I tried what Ubuntu Geek instructed to do, but it doesn't work for me.

Re: Cannot load Nvidia driver on Ubuntu 10.04

I posting this to help others ...

    I had exactly the same problem with ¨Cannot load nvidia.ko ... ¨ and ¨modprobe -r nouveau¨ -> nouveau IN USE

    I did the following:

    1. fresh install - because i had 32bit
    Ubuntu 10.04 x86_64
    2. downloaded nvidia driver from nvidia.com
    NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-195.36.24-pkg2
    3. Did the blacklisting - Howto install nVIDIA drivers manually on Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx)
    gsudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

    blacklist vga16fb
    blacklist nouveau
    blacklist rivafb
    blacklist nvidiafb
    blacklist rivatv
    4. then to be sure ->
    sudo apt-get --purge remove nvidia-*
!! 5. Reboot !!! - THE RECOVERY MODE IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF THE WHOLE PROCESS
    GRUB -> Choose (recovery mode)
    6. In the selection menu -> drop to root shell then
    init 3
    7. installed the driver with
    sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-195.36.24-pkg2
    8. It worked ,without any problem ...

    Hope it helps ...

P.S. : I am not sure if step 3. and 4. is required. Now it`s your job to test it.
    P.S. 2 : I think , I also installed linux-headers-2.6.32-21-generic via apt-get [

    EDIT 14.5.2010 :

In case of : "Error: unable to find the kernel source tree for the currently running kernel. Please make sure you have installed the kernal source files for your kernel and that they are properly configured..."

    sudo apt-get install linux-headers-`uname -r`

Question Re: Cannot load Nvidia driver on Ubuntu 10.04

    gab1x,

I was wondering, what kernel version are you using?
I'm trying Ubuntu Studio 10.04, and this is my first 64 bit OS I've ever used.
Even though I followed your methods described, I continuously get this:
"Error: unable to find the kernel source tree for the currently running kernel. Please make sure you have installed the kernal source files for your kernel and that they are properly configured..."

On another forum, a 64bit user mentioned that 195.36.15 would work but it doesn't as well.

How would I go about getting Nvidia's drivers to work with kernel 2.6.33 ?
Purging nouveau and/or nvidia-* so far hasn't helped. Neither has blacklisting.

EDIT: Alright, the only step I was missing besides all the steps gab1x listed was installing the kernel headers.
After following a link gab1x pm'ed me, this is the last step:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install linux-headers-`uname -r`
After that I was able to install the driver. Thanks gab1x

Re: Cannot load Nvidia driver on Ubuntu 10.04

    Hey guys,

I just installed the new NVidia drivers according to the instructions above (great btw! this should be sticky), but now, when I look into my Preferences or Administation menus, I can't find the NVidia system settings anywhere. They used to be there when I installed those drivers in 9.10...

    Any ideas?
