just open system > preferences > monitor. it should show the two monitors. you can toggle between monitors and select on - off . simple, isn't it?

Not a direct solution to the Empathy issue, but Pidgin seems to be connecting to the different protocols just fine....

The fix about changin the line of contacts worked excellent for me. the connected icon of my contacts changed, well. just use the fix it works like a charm!
