Notorious as they are, using them (and configuring through nvidia's config manager) might just give you the resolution you desire.
Open System Settings, navigate to Software Sources, and remove any unwanted repositories. The Updates tab would be of relevance to you too.
I'd say it seems your keyboard was playing up in this particular instance. Without logging in, is the issue at the login screen persistent?

mount -l lists all mounted filesystems - similar to df, but shows more information related to each filesystem, unlike df which only shows disk usage. PS: You also don't need sudo to run that. ;)

To get a list of mounted filesystems through a terminal, run:
df -h

GCC does have a C++ compiler, it is however conspicuously named g++. :)
