I am not trying to configure two monitors. I'm merly stating that my TV screen does support 1280x1024 but that when booting with it, I am not given the option to use that resolution.

Well I've managed to solve the VLC problem:
open VLC player, goto Tools->Preferences->Video and select X11 for the display output and that prevents the crash :)

I had the same problem with my Ubuntu 8.04 until I checked the logs (/var/log/apache2/error.log) and doubled check my config files.
