Well I've managed to solve the VLC problem:
open VLC player, goto Tools->Preferences->Video and select X11 for the display output and that prevents the crash :)

I had the same problem with my Ubuntu 8.04 until I checked the logs (/var/log/apache2/error.log) and doubled check my config files.
