Having studied this thread and got things working ok I gather I should be able to chroot into a 32 bit Hoary system that is already installed providing I mount the partition as /chroot in my 64bit...

Many thanks Crad, having followed your instructions I am now able to chroot into 32 bit hoary. I nearly gave up and returned to 32 system but am now a confirmed 64-bitter.

I think there should have been a health warning before unleashing such a sight on the unsuspecting Ubuntu user.
