It happens even if the screen saver is disabled. Upon further observations, it may freeze after just 5 minutes, or after a longer time, say 20 minutes or so.

While the laptop was off, I connected an external monitor and then booted the machine.

The laptop automatically used the external monitor, and never turned on it's built-in...
