you should be able to tack a & at the end of the process. like "firefox &"
you will then see its process ID. Let me know if this works out for you

Try in the terminal
compiz --replace
and then if that works hit ctrl+c and type: compiz --replace &
that should run it in the background and you can close the terminal
It might also be a compiz issue do you have Visual Effects on?
if so try turning them off at System>Preferences>Appearance>Visual Effects tab.

Sounds like it is starting it Fullscreen mode. This happened to my girlfriend and seems to be a common bug. Hit f11 and let me know if that changes it back.
