Was this the only screenlet you were running? Now that you mention it, i was running screenlets as well. But not this particular one, only Calendar and Weather.
I've also confirmed this on my machine, without Avant running. I hate problems like this. Lacking common identifier, no bug report to file... argh!
Edit: Ended up removing my OS all together and...
The only work-around I've found useful on my machine (slow keyboard buffer, video artifacts, dropped frames in video) is to turn off compisiting... using Metacity isn't enough, because Metacity is...
You sure metacity isn't doing any compositing?
In gconf-editor, under "apps" > "metacity" > 'compositing_manager'. Should be disabled.
Disabling composition helped. Seems to point to X11 composite rendering or graphic drivers.
Edit: I do not consider this a solution. Just a work-around until the cause can be found.
Also stutters on animated gifs for me. Nice catch.
Running on i5-750, 8G ram, nvidia 260gtx after upgrade from Lucid, symptoms follow:
- Text input just stops (buffers though, annoying as hell)

I just bought a new computer (board, graphics, memory, disk, processor) yesterday and it's been acting very strangely since.
I need help identifying the faulty hardware so I can resend it. Sending...
Sigh, how was it fixed?
This is the most annoying thing anyone can do in a support forum, post a problem that others have and then just say "fixed" without sharing the solution.

Get a pre-tiny version of Windows XP off the net or simply install Windows in a VirtualBox (or VMware), install tinyxp and take it from there.
There's no alsa-utils in my "bum" (insert lame joke here) (Bootup Manager).
I like Ubuntu as much as the next guy but these constant changes in the sound systems are starting to annoy me.
Had the same problem after upgrading from 9.04 (with a disabled Pulse Audio).
Went into ~/.gconf/system/gstreamer/ and moved the 0.10 folder out of there (as a test)
killall gconfd
Retarted...
"Abandoning Linux"... Easy on the drama!
They have just released Mac and Linux versions of Quake Live, so they're not abandoning the platform at all. It is quite understandable that they don't...
I've just reinstalled Ubuntu on my machine with ext4, because I wanted to try it. My computer has locked up three times in 2 days; mostly with high disk i/o but sometimes just out of the blue.

Totem refused to play MMS, the codec finder says no plugins are found. I've tried installing good, bad and the ugly codec packs to gstreamer and after ugly-multiverse my Totem just stops responding....
Hi Stoodle,
I've been playing Warcraft 3 (DoTA mostly) on our LAN for a while now with Windows players without any problems.
The only problem we had was that the Windows XP firewall had some...
It's one thing to ignore operating systems that you don't want to support but it's totally unacceptable that they deliberately sabotage Linux support this way.
I hope the FTC will take a look at...
Experiencing the same problem with the latest patch and v1 of Wine.
Do you happen to have the ID on that bug?
Very nice indeed. I'm too lazy to compile this myself though, waiting for the dpkg :)
This means I can stop avoiding the Kapps on my box.

I followed your guide and I finally have a mouse cursor that I can see, hurray :)
However I'm stuck at 800x600 resolution in a bloody Window. I've tried all sorts of black magic like changing the...
I suggest trying Klik (http://klik.atekon.de/) and downloading FF 1.5 from there if you want to try it on your machine.
It's alot faster than 1.0 on my computer at least. Besides, uninstalling a...
