Catalyst was the problem indeed, not hibernate.
I found all the Catalyst bits in aptitude and uninstalled them, everything is now working again.

I have been trying out Hibernate, and it didn't work that well.
Every time I restart, I end up with a garbled screen after GRUB, so I can't log on using X. Booting in text mode using the GRUB...
In fact, I can see that the recovery partition is considered by gparted as a Vista partition.
