Problems with usb wireless adaptor
I recently bought a TRENDnet TEW-648UB wireless adaptor but I can't seem to get it to work. When I plug it in the light on the 'WPS button' flashes, but nothing else happens. Does anyone know if 10.04 is supposed to support this devise and if not, how to get it to work?

Hi, I am quite new to Ubuntu myself but I read and learn a lot from this forum and info from the internet.
Perhaps you could start by posting the outputs of
Code:
sudo lshw -C network
You can save the outputs to a text file and transfer (via usb dongle) to a internet enabled computer for posting back here.
Hopefully some one more IT savvy can help.
I will try to at least provide some useful links.
Thanks

Re: Problems with usb wireless adaptor
Hi there, there appears to be a workable solution for a usb wireless adapter with the same device ID 0bda:8171 at this link http://csiuo.com/drupal/content/inst...der-ubuntu-104
You must decide whether or not to give it a try.
Please use copy and paste technique to get the codes/commands into a Terminal window on the Ubuntu machine with the wireless problem.
The Terminal commands/codes are as follows (these are taken from the above link):
Code:
echo 'install r8192s_usb modprobe --ignore-install r8192s_usb ; /bin/echo "0bda 8171" > /sys/bus/usb/drivers/rtl819xU/new_id' | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/r8192s_usb.conf
Code:
sudo ln -s /lib/firmware/RTL8192SE /lib/firmware/RTL8192SU
Code:
sudo modprobe -rf r8192s_usb
Code:
sudo modprobe r8192s_usb
All credit goes to the person who posted at the above link.
Good luck and let us know if it works.
Re: Problems with usb wireless adaptor
Thank you b k for the repost! works perfectly!
Re: Problems with usb wireless adaptor
 I've the same usb wireless adapter and the solution above didn't worked for me. Could see the AP but can't connect (keep on asking for the password).
So I decided to compile the Realtek's driver for Linux from their site: http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...Downloads=true
Just downloaded archive, followed instructions that is in there and everything works perfectly. Hope that will help someone else out there.
Ubuntu ROCKS :guitar:

This seems to work for me as well, as I can now see the local networks and try to connect to them. However, I can't seem to actually connect to my own, which is kind of a puzzle to me. This could easily be due to a security setting I have overlooked however.
